Cool things in AI development you should know about
You don’t have to be a software developer to have an opinion about AI. In fact, most people interact with AI long before they ever think about code. Whether it’s a recommendation on Netflix, a smarter search result, or a tool that helps you write an email faster, AI is already quietly shaping how we work and live.

As someone who works in software development, I spend a lot of time thinking about what AI can and cannot do. And while there are plenty of impressive technical breakthroughs, the things I find most interesting aren’t necessarily the most complex. They’re the things that make life a little easier, a little more accessible, and a little more human.

The automation of repetitive work

Let’s be honest: some tasks are just boring. Whether you're writing software, organizing documents, or processing information, there are activities that take a lot of time without adding much value. They're necessary, but they don't require much creativity. This is where AI shines.

AI can help automate repetitive tasks, summarize information, generate first drafts, analyze data, and speed up work that would otherwise consume hours of your day. The result isn't necessarily that people work less. It’s that they can spend more time on the parts of their work that actually require human judgment, creativity, and experience.

In software development, that might mean generating boilerplate code or creating documentation. Outside of software, it could mean drafting emails, organizing notes, or writing a skill that automatically formats your powerpoint presentations.

The common denominator is simple: less time spent on repetitive work.

Accessibility and personalization

One of the most underrated aspects of AI is its ability to adapt to people. Our brains don't all work the same way. We process information differently. We need different levels of stimulation, different forms of support, and different ways of learning. The world around us, however, is often highly standardized. AI makes personalization much easier.

Need a complex topic explained in simpler language? AI can do that. Prefer visual explanations over text? AI can help with that too. Want information summarized, translated, restructured, or adapted to your learning style? That's increasingly becoming possible.

For many people, AI isn't just about productivity. It's about making information and work more accessible. And that has the potential to be genuinely transformative.

Why should non-developers care?

Because ultimately, most of us are looking for the same thing. We want technology that helps us accomplish more with less friction.

We want fewer administrative headaches, less time spent on repetitive tasks, and more time for the things that matter. Whether that's doing meaningful work, spending time with family, learning something new, or simply reducing stress.

When implemented responsibly, AI can help deliver on that promise.

Is it understandable that people are afraid of AI?

Absolutely. AI is scary. But if we're honest, change has always been scary.

The concerns people have are real. AI is disrupting industries and changing how work gets done. Some consequences are already visible, and not all of them are positive.

There are valid concerns about growing energy consumption and the pressure it places on natural resources. There are concerns about jobs, particularly knowledge-based and administrative roles, and what automation means for the future of work. There are also concerns about inequality, where advanced AI tools may become more accessible to those who can afford them while others are left behind.

These aren't irrational fears. They're legitimate questions about the kind of future we want to build.

At the same time, history teaches us that technological change rarely stops because we want it to. The internet happened. Smartphones happened. Cloud computing happened. AI is happening too.

The question isn't whether AI will be part of tomorrow. It almost certainly will be.

The real question is how we shape that future. Which values from yesterday do we carry forward? Which problems do we solve? Which trade-offs are we willing to accept?

Personally, I'd rather engage with that conversation today than have it happen without me. Because understanding a technology is often the first step toward influencing how it's used.

The good news is that you don't need a computer science degree to understand AI.

If you're looking for a solid introduction, I often recommend IBM's AI Think series. It does an excellent job of explaining the fundamentals without assuming a technical background.

The future isn't waiting

Whether you're excited about AI, skeptical of it, or somewhere in between:

AI is no longer a future technology. It's a present-day reality.

That doesn't mean we should blindly embrace every new tool that appears or just ignore the risks. Rather, how we use AI today should be in line with how we wish AI will be used in the future. And there are some cool usecases out there.
